比較の表現

形容詞や副詞の形を変化させて、比較級、最上級、同等比較を表現することができる。

最上級	the + 形容詞・副詞 + est + of/in+ est + of/in	一番…な	2つ以上の中で、 どれが1番上かを 表現	This baggage is the lightest of the three. この荷物は3つの中で1番軽い。 This baggage is the lightest in bag. この荷物は3つのバッグの中で1番軽い。
同等 比較	as + 形容詞・副詞 + as	…と同じくらい～だ	2つが同じである ことを表現	This baggage is as light as that one. この荷物はあの荷物と同じくらい軽い。
	not as + 形容詞・副詞 + as	～ほど…ではない	2つが同じでない ことを表現	This baggage is not as light as that one. この荷物はあの荷物ほど軽くない。

最上級で、ofの後ろはthe + 数字か複数名詞になる。inの後ろは、場所や範囲を表す単数名詞になる。

比較対象が具体的ではなく、一般的な人や物の場合、anyoneで「他の誰か」、anythingで「他の何か」のように表す。

「（2者の間で）より…の方」を表す場合、比較級でもtheが必要になる。

形容詞や副詞を比較級や最上級にする際、次のように変化させる。

比較の書き換え

比較級、最上級、同等比較の文は、それぞれ書き換えることができる。

比較の倍数表現

同等比較の前に倍数を表す語を追加すると、「…倍の」という表現になる。

He works twice as fast as me.（彼は私の2倍仕事が速い。）


他の倍数を表す語も覚えておこう。

3倍以上になると、可算名詞の場合as many … as、不可算名詞の場合as much … asを用いる。
He has three times as many books as I do.（彼は私の3倍の本を持っている。）

比較の強調表現

比較級の直前にmuch、far、a lot、最上級の直前にmuch、by farを置くと、「はるかに」「ずば抜けて」と強調することができる。

My sister is a much better cook than me.（妹は私よりはるかに料理が上手い。）

She is by far the quickest at calculations of the three.（3人の中で、彼女はずば抜けて一番計算が速い。）

比較の慣用表現

比較には、次のような慣用表現がある。

no more than…	たったの…	no less than	…もの

no more thanはonlyと同じ意味になる。

否定文の内容を受けて、much lessで「まして…でない」を表すことができる。
She can’t ride a bicycle, much less a motorcycle.（彼女は自転車に乗れないし、ましてバイクにはなおさら乗れない。）
